Vilabertran stuffed apple

Gastronomy

These apples have been the heritage of this neighbouring village of Figueres for centuries. In the past, it was the local custom to eat them halfway through the dance during the summer festivities, which drew people from all over the Empordà. The apples are simmered for two to three days, in several sessions, and stuffed with sweet sausage meat, almonds, egg, aniseed, cinnamon, chocolate, lemon, cookies, and sugar. You can taste them at the Vilabertran Stuffed Apple Fair, which takes place in mid-September.
