We propose various enogastronomic routes through Figueres to explore the history of modern Catalan cuisine, taste it, and pair it with some of the most authentic wines from Empordà, guided by sommelier Laura Masramon. It all began in the 1960s when chefs Lluís Duran Camps (1910-1981) and Josep Mercader Brugués (1926-1979), influenced by the techniques of French nouvelle cuisine, revolutionized the traditional Empordà recipe book of sea and mountain. Duran transformed the Celler de Ca la Teta into a gastronomic institution and Salvador Dalí's private dining room. Mercader is considered the father of modern Catalan cuisine, and his story is written by the renowned gastronomic critic Josep Pla. Both are pioneers of culinary avant-garde, which blossoms 50 years later with the Bulli Foundation.
In case of food allergy, please, contact the sommelier (sommelier@lauramaramon.com) once you have made your purchase.
THE AVANT-GARDE CLASSICS ROUTE:
The route begins in the hall of the Hotel Duran. Inside the old Celler de Ca la Teta inn dating back to 1827, we taste a surf and turf tipical dish by chef Lluïsa Duran, paired with a wine from the Empordà. The Duran family has owned this winery since 1855, and its history has been marked by several chefs, such as Teresa Camps and her son Lluís Duran Camps.
Taking a twenty-minute walk we will pass by the Dalí Theatre-Museum and arrive at El Motel, a hotel-restaurant founded in 1961 by Josep Mercader, whose recipes have nurtured contemporary Catalan cuisine. Sitting under the portrait of Josep Pla we will taste their seasonal cuisine by Jaume and Jordi Subirós, son-in-law and grandson, paired of course with wine from the Empordà.
This tour includes 2 glases of wine and 2 tapas in the restaurants Motel and Duran.

THE MARKET ROUTE:
The tour begins at the Balcó Mirador de la Plaça del Mercat de Figueres, located on the first floor of Plaça Catalunya, from where you can see the fruit and vegetable market stalls that are open to the public every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. With a welcome tasting we will discover the dairy products of Japet dels Bous and the honeys of Lluch Apicultors, a tasting that we will accompany with a sweet wine with the Empordà Designation of Origin. We will go down to visit farmers’ stalls such as els Quatre Vents de Vilafant and butchers’ stalls such as Embotits Ginjaume d’Avinyonet de Puigventós. We will taste fresh produce, olive oils, nuts, sausages and other local delicacies.
Then we have a seasonal rice meal at Can Jeroni, a family restaurant located in the market square and run by chef Roser Bronsoms, the fourth generation of women at the helm of this century-old business. Authentic Catalan traditional dishes made with local products, with the fork breakfasts as a specialty. We will combine it with a white Empordà wine made from native varieties.
This tour includes 2 glases of wine, a few tapas in the market stalls and the restaurant Can Jeroni, the wine glass and the wine glass carrier.
