FIGUERES FOOD AND WINE ROUTES

Guided Tours

We propose various enogastronomic routes through Figueres to explore the history of modern Catalan cuisine, taste it, and pair it with some of the most authentic wines from Empordà, guided by sommelier Laura Masramon. It all began in the 1960s when chefs Lluís Duran Camps (1910-1981) and Josep Mercader Brugués (1926-1979), influenced by the techniques of French nouvelle cuisine, revolutionized the traditional Empordà recipe book of sea and mountain. Duran transformed the Celler de Ca la Teta into a gastronomic institution and Salvador Dalí's private dining room. Mercader is considered the father of modern Catalan cuisine, and his story is written by the renowned gastronomic critic Josep Pla. Both are pioneers of culinary avant-garde, which blossoms 50 years later with the Bulli Foundation.

THE AVANT-GARDE CLASSICS ROUTE:

The itinerary starts at the Hotel Duran (the ancien "Celler de Ca la Teta Restaurant"), run by the grandchildren of Lluís Duran Camps, Lluïsa and Ramon Duran. A museum space that has hosted countless meetings and celebrations of Salvador Dalí, steeped in a strong gastronomic tradition. There, we will taste an Empordà wine paired with one of its classic and supreme seafood and mountain dishes. Afterwards, we will walk to the bottom of the Galatea Tower of the Dali's Museum. Finally, we will go to El Motel, a restaurant founded by Josep Mercader, where we will taste the first Empordà wine accompanied by the seasonal dish offered by this emblematic restaurant, with the participation of Jaume Subirós.

THE MARKET ROUTE:

The Fruit and Vegetable Market of Figueres is one of the historic markets of the capital of the ancient Emporion, which in both Latin and Greek means precisely market. Since Jaume I granted Figueres the privilege of being a royal town, synonymous with freedom, every Thursday morning farmers from the whole region come to sell what they grow. The route starts at the restaurant Can Jeroni, where chef Roser Bronsoms, the fourth generation of women in charge, will delight us with a seasonal rice dish that we will pair with a deeply rooted Empordà wine. Her kitchen exudes authentic Catalan cuisine and is nourished by fresh market produce to serve fork breakfasts to her demanding clientele. After that, we will stroll through the market to finish by tasting some typical Empordà products accompanied by a second wine in the market’s new gastronomic space.
