The City of Figueres International Circus Festival was conceived with the goal of presenting in each festival the top 22 attractions ever seen in European circuses. More than 60 artists from a dozen countries compete in front of an international jury composed of 18 important circus directors and experts from around the world. The two semi-finals (Blue and Red shows, totally different) and the final (Gold show) are held in the new Big Top located right in the middle of the Figueres Fairground and which accommodates up to 2,250 spectators.
The circus sector in Spain entered a deep crisis at the end of the 1970s: as top quality shows disappeared, the circus became synonymous with mindless children’s entertainment. The International Circus Festival in Figueres is one of very few high quality events of its kind in the area. It is a show that appeals to everyone, regardless of ages, races or social status. Figueres has established itself as a leading European city on the world map of great circus events.
